Other New Web & File Server Features

AppleShare IP 6.2 Web & File Server also has the following new features:

AppleShare Home directory support

The AppleShare IP 6 administrator can create home directory folders which can contain user folders for each user. After the administrator creates the home folder and sets access privileges, a folder for a user is automatically created when the user logs in for the first time to the AppleShare file server. When the name of the user is displayed in the volume list in the Chooser, the user can log on to his own folder to save and store information. Each home directory folder can be viewed and accessed only by its owner. This automatic feature will save Administrators time in setting up individual sharepoints for each new User.

Note the selected Home Directory button in the Sharepoint Privileges window:

For example, User 2 in the Group 'Finance' will now find his/her own unique folder in the User2 mounted volume as seen below.

Sherlock indexing of shared folders

The AppleShare IP administrator can now create a separate Sherlock index file for each share point. Only one index can exist for a share point. Each index has the access privileges associated with the user/group, owner or guest specified by the administrator in the Web & File Admin program.

Note: Requires MacOS 8.5 or later installed on client and server.

To create a Sherlock Index for a SharePoint

1- Open Web & File Admin

2- Choose Show Disks & SharePoints under the Server menu.

3- Click twice on a volume name to open its Privileges window

4- Assign an Owner and User/Group to the volume.

5- Click on the button for 'Make this a share point and set privileges'

6- Save the changes you made to this sharepoints privileges.

A Sherlock button will now appear in the Privileges window.

7- Click on the Sherlock button to create an Index. If not already done, Select the access privileges you want the Index to be based on. For Users to access it, you will need to select User/Group.

8- Select the Create Index button.

Users will now be able to search the contents of a mounted AppleShare IP 6.2 sharepoint thru the MacOS 8.5 client's Sherlock application.

Simplified cache panel

AppleShare IP 6 Web & File server allows you to set the maximum amount of memory available to run the Web & File Server. By setting a maximum, you make sure that there is enough memory to run other applications. In the previous releases of AppleShare IP, you set the maximum amount of memory needed for other applications.

Non-accessible share points are not visible

With AppleShare IP 6 Web & File Server, users can only see those share points to which they have access in the volume list in the Chooser.

Sherlock Web plug-in

You can use the Sherlock Web plug-in to search the contents of a Web folder. To enable this, the administrator uses the Sherlock application to create an index for the volume on which the Web folder is located (not for the web folder itself). To use the plug-in, enter the URL http://website/.sherlock, where "website" is the address of your website. The plug-in returns up to a 100 hits. For more details about this plug-in, see the Sherlock web plug-in Read Me.
